Timmelsjoch is a high mountain pass that creates a link through the Ötztal Alps along the border between Austria and Italy. Sometimes referred to as the secret passage this road is not as used as the other passes to the east and west of it. There is a reason for that and that is because of the actual road itself. From the Austrian side the road winds gently up and cars can flow with ease, however, the Italian side has far more tight bends and the road gets closed more frequently. When we were there it was mid-summer and still, there was snow to be found and very changeable conditions. This Austrian side we enjoyed but the Italian side we enjoyed the most.
Found to the North West of Girona, one of the most cycled areas in the world, this is a very unknown and un-written climb even though it has appeared in the Vuelta Espana. Isolated but absolutely worth making the pilgrimage to the starting town of Camprodon. Winding gently through the valleys through an ever-changing landscape as you reach the summit which is the ski resort at 2000m. Valter 2000! aptly named and during the summer you'll have the road to yourself as it's a one-way road, and few cars use it. We really enjoyed this climb.
